Panthers notch OT win

In a nail-biter on the gridiron that went into overtime, the Park City Panthers defeated the Broadview/Lavina Pirates 48-46 on Sept. 25 in Broadview.
Panther junior quarterback Tucker Zuhoski opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a 27-yard pass to senior receiver Zach Stutterheim.
But the Pirates roared back with three touchdowns – a 1-yard run by senior quarterback Joel Nelson, a 27-yard pass to sophomore receiver Andrew Glennie, and a 3-yard run by junior Jacob Reed.
The Panthers scored one more time in the half with a 3-yard run by Zuhoski, narrowing the score to 20-12 by halftime.
Nelson opened up the third-quarter scoring with a 12-yard pass to Pirate senior receiver Scott Bymaster, but the Panthers followed up with three touchdowns in a row – a 3-yard pass to Stutterheim, a 3-yard run by Zuhoski and a 6-yard pass to junior receiver Devon Dennis.
Broadview/Lavina and Park City exchanged touchdowns for the rest of regulation time, with Pirate junior Cole Jensen running in from 32 yards out, Zuhoski scoring on an 8-yard run for the Panthers, and Nelson passing to Jensen for another Pirate touchdown.
The game was tied at 40-40 when time ran out.
The Pirates scored first in overtime on a 13-yard pass to Glennie, but the point-after attempt failed, and it was the Panthers turn at overtime offense. Zuhoski’s 5-yard pass to Dennis tied the game at 46-46, and the two-point conversion was good, giving the Panthers the winning edge.
Park City head coach JayTee Tarpley praised his team for hanging tough.
“Connor May had a good game, especially when he broke loose late in the game for a 50-plus yard run that changed the momentum for us,” Tarpley said about the Panthers’ senior running back. “He runs hard, keeps his feet moving – a tough kid who’s hard to tackle.”
Both Panther receivers Stutterheim and Dennis had good games, Tarpley said, battling for balls in the air. He also credited senior James Marchand for “filling holes” on defense.
“He’s been bouncing back and forth from defensive end to middle linebacker,” Tarpley said. “I’m really proud how he handled that.”
The Panthers are now 2-3 in conference play. Next up they play the Shields Valley Rebels at home on Friday, Oct. 2.
“The Rebels are another tough little team,” Tarpley said. “We need to come out with guns blazing and ready to go. As showed this week, it helps to do well in the first quarter and not have to play catch up.”
