Park City Panther Devon Dennis grabs an interception in last weekend’s 36-30 win over the White Sulphur Springs Hornets.

Panthers come back to win opener

The Park City Panthers broke a fourth-quarter tie score to win their season opener in White Sulphur Springs on Saturday, Aug. 29, defeating the Hornets 36-30.
“It was a really good game, a real battle,” Park City coach JayTee Tarpley, in his first season for the Panthers, said. “I’m really proud of our kids for sticking it out, for their mental toughness.”
The Panthers jumped out quickly to 22-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Hornets responded in the second quarter with a TD reception.
Park City got the ball back and was driving down the field when junior quarterback Tucker Zuhoski tripped while fading back for a pass and fumbled the ball. A Hornet defender grabbed the ball and scored, leaving the score at the half 22-16.
The Panthers scored in the third quarter, but White Sulphur Springs came back with two unanswered touchdowns, leaving the score tied 30-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Park City senior running back Connor May scored on a 3-yard run about midway through the fourth quarter. The Hornets got the ball back and were driving downfield when quarterback Ethan Nyhart’s pass was intercepted.
“We tried to run out the clock, but we just couldn’t get a first down,” Tarpley said. “But they threw another interception, and we were finally able to run out the clock.”
Zuhoski, playing both ways, intercepted one of Nyhart’s throws. May had three running TDs, and junior receiver Zach Stutterheim had a TD reception in the third quarter.
“We ran a lot, but I want to see more passing,” Tarpley said. “It’s in our playbook, but it was really windy there and our running game was working well.”
Park City takes on the Harlowton Engineers in a homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 4.
