Cougars down Wolves at Homecoming

The Cougars brought smiles to their cheering Homecoming fans on Sept. 16 by defeating the visiting Three Forks Wolves 25-8.
“Its always nice to get the win – especially on Homecoming,” Columbus head coach Blake Hoge said.
Senior EJ Daniels led the Cougars with 136 yards at 5.9 yards per carry, while senior Chuck Miller added 72 more at 5.1 per carry.
“This is a testament to our line getting it done in the trenches,” Hoge said.
Junior quarterback Eddie Foos went 4-for-9 with 61 passing yards and one interception. He lost 15 yards on six rushing attempts. Senior receiver Jace Aumueller had two receptions for 35 yards, and Miller had one reception for 11 yards.
Defensively, the Cougars were led by Miller with 4 1/2 tackles and one tackle for a loss. Aumueller had five tackles and two sacks, and senior Dustin Stepper had five tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery.
The Cougars shut down all 11 of the Wolves’ third down plays. Each team lost the ball twice on fumbles.
“We had some new faces step up for us in Dylan Raihl and Erik Schmidt that I think will make more and more of an impact as we progress,” Hoge said.
Raihl, a sophomore who replaced the injured Colton Getz at running back, had one reception for 15 yards. Sophomore Dylan Wylie, who returned after an injury in the first game of the season, rushed for 27 yards on three carries and kicked in an extra point.
“I think we can use Friday’s game to build some momentum as we start our conference schedule next week at Red Lodge,” Hoge said. “We need to continue to improve on a weekly basis and cut down on our mental mistakes and turnovers if we hope to be competitive throughout the remainder of the season.”
The Cougars are now 2-1 in non-conference games. They will face the Rams in Red Lodge on Friday, Sept. 23.
