Cougars down Herders in Big Timber
The Columbus Cougars emerged victorious in Big Timber last Friday, Oct. 14, improving to 3-0.
The 20-22 win dropped Big Timber to 1-2.
“For the second week in a row, we won the game by stopping a two point conversion. I’m proud of how our defense stepped up when it counted most,” said Cougar Coach Blake Hoge. “Big Timber gave us everything we could handle, but we were still able to eke out another win and earn a playoff berth.
Hoge said wind and rain made for a sloppy mess on the field so the Cougars relied mostly on rushing the ball. EJ Daniels led the team offensively with 138 yards on 16 carries, giving him 8.6 yards a touch. “Props to our offensive line who fought in the mud and the water to open up running lanes for our backs and gave us time to throw when we needed,” said Hoge. “Dylan Raihl led us through the air with 4 catches for 54 yards, including a touchdown and a two point conversion.”
On the defense where linebackers Cody Wegner (8.5 tackles) and Erik Schmidt (6 tackles) and free safety, Chuck Miller (6.5 tackles).
“Dustin Stepper also had a nice game from his nose tackle spot, tallying 5 tackles of his own,” said Hoge. “This was certainly a whole team effort and it took contributions from everyone on the field to get the W.”
This Friday’s game against Roundup will be for the conference championship and will decide whether the Cougars have a home playoff game or have to travel for the first round. It will also serve as Senior Night for the Cougars.
The first round of playoffs takes place on Oct. 29.
