Trey Ostrum puts up a shot.

Cougar boys win streak snapped in triple OT

The first time the Columbus boys played the Shepherd Mustangs this year, the Cougars held the Mustangs scoreless in the first quarter, leading to a 53-38 Cougar win.
In Saturday’s rematch, the ‘Stangs were not as obliging, leading through much of the game and finally prevailing 73-69 in a three overtime thriller. The loss snapped the Columbus winning streak at six.
Shepherd was led by senior John Mushaben’s 31 points, including a critical 3-pointer that knotted the score late in the second overtime. Columbus countered with 30 points from Tanner Osborne, as the junior scored consistently on the inside.
But the Cougars could not hang on to leads, including a 51-45 lead with three minutes left in regulation when junior Ryland Stampfel put back a missed shot. Columbus also held a 65-61 early in the third overtime before Shepherd rallied for the win.
Friday, the Columbus boys subdued Red Lodge 62-40.
The Columbus girls could not parlay any momentum from winning two games last weekend and dropped 46-33 and 46-36 decisions to Red Lodge and Shepherd. Scoring droughts early in both games doomed the Cougars as the team only managed twelve points in each of the first halves.
Both Cougar teams host class A Laurel Thursday then hit the road for Three Forks on Saturday.
