Benbow bear still on the lam
This is one smart grizzly bear.
Despite ongoing efforts to trap a bruin believed to be responsible for eight cattle deaths in the Benbow area between Aug. 14 and Sept. 6, the animal has continued to elude capture.
“She seldom returns to kill sites so traps set in the vicinity of previous kills have proven useless. So we have tried to intercept her along the travel routes we have detected through the use of GPS satellite tracking,” said Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologist Shawn Stewart. “After traps are set along the travel routes she comes close to the trap sites but then tiptoes off another way. She will not come anywhere near a trap or snare. She has also avoided all attempts to shoot her at night or out of a helicopter.”
There have been no documented cases of cattle depredations since Sept. 6 and the bear is tracked daily through a GPS radio collar. It was outfitted with that collar when it was relocated from east of Red Lodge to the Gallatin River, south of Bozeman, in late July. It was relocated because it was believed to have been involved in cattle depredation near Red Lodge.
Because of her history, she will be euthanized when caught.
FWP and Wildlife Services work cooperatively in these cases, with FWP monitoring the locations of bears and providing ground support to Wildlife Services as needed.
“For now she is beating us at every turn but that does not mean we are giving up or slowing down,” said Stewart. “Wildlife Services tries something new each day.”
