Train tragedy accident
The train versus pickup truck collision last week in Sweet Grass County that killed a Columbus man has been ruled accidental by the coroner, yet remains under official investigation.
Robert F. Hensel Jr., 59, was killed in the Aug. 19 incident that occurred at the Montana Rail Link railroad crossing leading to the Bratten Fishing Access at approximately 12:50 p.m. The truck and train came to rest about 50 yards down from the impact point, which is a crossing that has only a stop sign and not signal arms.
Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Bill Bullock, who is handling the investigation, said Hensel was traveling across the crossing, but was not parked on the tracks. Bullock said it is unknown why he was driving slowly, but it could have possibly been related to some problem that may have occurred with the truck’s gas pedal due to braces and oversized shoes Hensel wore.
MRL is also involved in the investigation.
Sweet Grass County Sheriff Dan Tronrud, who is also the coroner, said this week he has ruled the death accidental and the result of blunt force trauma.
Hensel was in the process of shuttling fishermen’s vehicles at the time of the accident.
A celebration of life, including military honors, will be held at a later date in Columbus, said close friend Marilyn Morris.
