Police chief retiring in October after 41-year career in LE

Columbus Police Chief Bill Pronovost advised the Columbus City Council last week he will be retiring Oct. 19.
Pronovost has been the chief in Columbus since August 2006.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my 10-plus years as chief,” Pronovost wrote in a letter to the council. “Quite simply, after a 41-year+plus career in law enforcement, it is time to become a civilian.”
Pronovost also wrote that his decision had nothing to do with recent staff issues, but rather something he and his wife had been discussing for the past two years.
Prior to coming to Columbus in August 2016, Pronovost served as chief in West Yellowstone for 7 1/2 years. Prior to that, he retired from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office where he ran the Missouri River Drug Task Force for 10 years as well as Search and Rescue for 14 years.
