Inmate escapes waiting for prints
A woman sentenced to jail on misdemeanor counts of theft and obstructing a police officer escaped custody late Wednesday afternoon while waiting to be fingerprinted.
Tammy Cleveland had just appeared in Columbus City Court and been sentenced to six months in jail for the offenses that occurred earlier in the day.
While waiting to be fingerprinted in the Stillwater County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland walked out of the back door and eluded deputies and Columbus police for about an hour before she was found northeast of the old hospital, said Undersheriff Chip Kem.
She was not armed and not considered dangerous, Kem added.
Cleveland was brought back before City Court Judge Lee Cornell on a new charge of misdemeanor escape. Cleveland said that she had consumed a pint of tequila but was ready to proceed - an admission she did not make at her first appearance.
Cornell stopped the proceedings and slated another hearing for Thursday through video.
