Game On!
If you saw a lot of blue, gold and maroon on kids around Stillwater County this week, there was a great reason why.
The schools engaged in the annual Montana State University Bobcat versus University of Montana Grizzly food drive.
A Bobcat box and a Grizzly box were set at all participating schools and the box with the most donations by the end of the week is declared the winner. Last year proved to be ‘Cat country for the third consecutive year with Columbus, Reed Point and Rapelje taking in the most donations in their MSU boxes. The Grizzlies claimed Park City and Absarokee Elementary was a tie.
In all, approximately 3,400 pounds of food was donated to Project Hope during the week last year with the majority of that being generated by the schools. Columbus Elementary set the bar high, accounting for 1,000 pounds of that total.
The food was enough to fill the 85 to 95 Thanksgiving boxes that Project Hope gives out, with food left over to use for the Christmas season. Project Hope’s Executive Director Marcia Spano said specific needs at this time are canned fruit, canned vegetables, tomato sauce, chili, canned beans, soup, chicken broth and cranberry sauce.
Project Hope’s Ed Hamilton organized the food drive efforts with the school.
Statewide Cat-Griz Food Drive
This marks the 16th year the food drive contest between MSU and UM has preceded the yearly Cat - Griz football game. The statewide competition began Nov. 7 and will end at halftime of the game, which will be Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Cat-Griz game in Bozeman. All donated food items go to food banks in Bozeman and Missoula. It’s a competition the Bobcats routinely win and do so soundly.
On The Field
Only the Grizzlies are still alive in the fight for a possible post-season play-off, currently in a four-way tie with a 5-2 conference record so far this season. Overall the Griz are 6-4. MSU is 3-4 in conference play and 5-5 overall. Southern Utah is running away from the pack with an 6-1 conference record.
