Breaking News: Body found in burned car ID'd as Reed Point Man
Investigators have released the name of a Reed Point man found dead in a burning car Tuesday evening near his home.
Lee Eldon Bowman Jr., 58, is believed to be the victim of the fire, although dental records will be needed for a 100 percent identification. Stillwater County Sheriff Cliff Brophy said Bowman's family has been notified.
Bowman was found in his burning 1987 El Camino shortly after 6:25 p.m. on Trees Road, near his home. Brophy said it appeared as if Bowman had missed his driveway and become stuck on a berm. Subsequently a fire started, fully engulfing the vehicle. It is unknown why Bowman did not get out of the car, although a metal post was partially blocking the driver's door, said Brophy. An autopsy did not indicate any criminal activity was involved regarding the death, said Brophy.
The accident is being investigated by the Montana Highway Patrol, the death is being investigated by the sheriff's office and the cause of the fire is being investigated by Columbus Fire Rescue. MHP could not be reached by press time for further information.
Brophy said Wednesday that it was not yet known what caused Bowman to miss his driveway, not get out of the car or the manner of death, noting he could have died prior to the fire.
Fire crews responded to the location after receiving a report of a car on fire on Trees Road at 6:25 p.m. The flames had spread to surrounding grass upon the arrival of fire crews. Once the flames were extinguished, emergency crews discovered the body.
