Benevolence

I believe benevolence is among the highest of Christian virtues. My simple personal definition includes “giving someone the benefit of the doubt” or “cutting someone some slack.”
We need more benevolence in our world today! Honestly, when we lack benevolence, we shoot ourselves in the foot because benevolence provides benefits for both the receiver AND giver.
Benevolence implies “wishing the best for others.” It is not selfish and it’s more than charity — you can’t just write the check and walk away. Scripture says, “Each one should look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Benevolence readily involves KINDNESS.
Why is it our first response to disagreements is usually to go for the jugular, to inflict pain and draw blood? We react by chopping someone off at the knees. Or even slicing their head off with our thoughts and words. Like throwing a verbal bomb on Facebook or penning a scathing anonymous letter. Then add the poison of gossip, and Satan dances double time.
Benevolence first seeks UNDERSTANDING. Walking in someone else’s shoes before condemning them, or as Scripture says, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” It will be brimming with COMPASSION. Like what some kind people have recently shown us through our family trials.
Folks, we live in an ANGRY time. My friends, the antidote is BENEVOLENCE. For our marriages and our families. Extending into our neighborhoods and workplaces. In our city, county, state, nation and far beyond.
Benevolence is being GRACE-FULL. And if we mix in a little GRATITUDE, this could truly be a blessed Thanksgiving...
